Eligibility Requirements
If your study permit includes a condition that says you can work on or off-campus, you may be eligible to work in Canada while studying. Most international students in Canada can work for up to 20 hours per week, and full-time during scheduled breaks, without a work permit. You can only start working in Canada when your study program has started. You can’t work before you start your studies.
You and your employer must make sure you can work off-campus without a work permit before you start working. If you start working off-campus but don’t meet the requirements, you may have to leave Canada.
If you’re in the last semester of your study program and you don’t need a full course load to complete your program, you may be eligible to work off-campus without a work permit. If you receive your study permit after the 1st of June 2023, your study permit will indicate if you are able to work off-campus. If so, you are allowed to work for up to 20 hours per week while your program is in session, and full-time during scheduled breaks in the academic calendar. You must have the appropriate work permit in order to take part in a co-op or internship program. You may also be able to apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) to continue working in Canada after you graduate.
It’s important to note that there are some cases where a study permit may not authorize an international student to work while studying in Canada. Additionally, if you want to work off-campus, you and your employer must make sure you can work off-campus without a work permit before you start working.
With Co-op students or Interns, you will have to get a work permit if your study program includes co-op or internship placement.
